Questions About Baptism

  • Baptism is a public profession of faith in Jesus and a symbolic act of obedience that represents your identification with Christ. It pictures the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus (Romans 6:3–4). Going under the water represents dying to your old life, and coming up out of the water symbolizes being raised to walk in newness of life. It does not save you, but it shows outwardly what has already taken place in your heart—your repentance and faith in Christ.

  • We baptize by immersion in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This means the person is fully immersed in water and then raised up again. That’s the New Testament pattern and the practice.

  • People who have personally trusted in Jesus Christ for salvation should be baptized. We practice believer’s baptism, so it is not for infants or people who have not yet made a conscious decision to follow Christ.

  • A person should be baptized after they have consciously and personally trusted in Jesus Christ for salvation. In other words, baptism follows salvation—it is not a step taken before, or in order to receive, salvation. The way we baptize people is sometimes called believer’s baptism.

  • If someone was baptized before they genuinely came to faith in Christ (for example, as a child who later realizes they weren’t saved at the time), they should be baptized after salvation (as a believer). That is not considered a second baptism—it is their real baptism. However, if a person was already baptized after coming to faith, there is no biblical need to be baptized again.

  • Yes, as long as each person being baptized has personally trusted Christ and is taking this step for themselves. We regularly baptize multiple people in the same service although each person’s profession of faith is personal and individual.

  • No speech is required.
As your baptism is one of the strongest testimonies of Jesus, Pastor Ryan will ask you two questions:
    1. Have you come to a place in your spiritual life where you know you will be with God forever?
    and
    2. Who do you trust for this gift of forgiveness and eternal life?
Because you trust in Jesus Christ alone for forgiveness and life forever with God, you will be baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—buried with Christ in baptism and raised to walk in newness of life.

  • The next step is very simple: let us know!
Call the church office or come down after a worship service and talk to a pastor. We’ll talk briefly to hear your testimony, answer any additional questions, and schedule a date for your baptism in an upcoming service. We’ll then follow up and call you to explain what to expect on the day of your baptism.
