With each day that passes we hear again of another politician who is guilty of an adulterous relationship or a businessman who has stolen money from people. It seems like there are so few good men in public these days. Which leads to the question, “What is a good man?” I recently did a study in Proverbs to see what are the qualities of a good man. Here is what I found:

A good man is faithful to his wife and is careful in his relationship with women.

Solomon says to his sons in Proverbs 7:25 – “Do not let you heart turn aside to her ways, and do not stray into her paths.” A good man is always careful and will never do anything to compromise his wife or family. I know too many men who have lost their families because they were not careful to do right around women.

2.     A good man is never shaken by criticism.

Proverbs 9:8 says, “Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you, reprove a wise man and he will love you.” Reprove means to show disapproval for someone. A good man handles the difficult situations of life is never threaten by them. In fact he responds in patience and kindness to those who reprove him.

A good man is careful in his words.

Proverbs 11:12 – “a man of understanding keeps silent.” A good man has learned through his life to exercise great care in what he says. That is why a man of understanding knows when to speak and when to be silent.

4.     A good man shows respect to all men.

Proverbs 12:16 – “a fool’s anger is known at once, but a prudent man conceals dishonor.” A good man will always conceal the faults, mistakes, and errors of other men. He will treat all men with respect. He understands man’s nature and the importance of respect in relationships. (Golden rule)

A good man is a generous man.

Proverbs 11:25 - “The generous man will be prosperous, and he who waters will himself be watered.” A good man is always ready to share his resources with others. He shares not to be seen, but because he truly cares for others.

6.    A good man is hard-working.

Proverbs 12:27 – “the precious possession of a man is diligence”. Diligence is characterized by steady, earnest, and energetic effort. A good man is always getting the job done and done well.

A good man is always cautious in his actions.

Proverbs 14:16 – “a wise man is cautious and turns away from evil.” Proverbs 13:16 – every prudent man acts with knowledge. A good man always makes sure he has the answers before he responds in life. He never acts quickly without careful thought about his actions.

8.    A good man cares for his family even after his death.

Proverbs 13:22
A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children. Proverbs 19:14 House and wealth are an inheritance from fathers. A good man works hard to take care of his family and in the process of living his life is able to build up enough to take care of his children and his grandchildren after this death. The inheritance is a demonstration that he truly cares for his own children and his grandchildren.

A good man is very careful what he listens to in life.

Proverbs 21:28 The man who listens to the truth will speak forever. Proverbs 17:4 An evildoer listens to wicked lips; a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue. A man who listens to those who are destructive in their words and evil in their thought is not a good man. What a man listen to in life is a demonstration of his heart. A good man seeks truth and listens to truth. He will be a man who has something to say in life.

A good man never quits!

Proverbs 24:16 For a righteous man falls seven times, and rises again, But the wicked stumble in time of calamity. A good man keeps getting back up in life. He will face defeats and difficult times, but he never quits. He never blames others at work or in his family. He never looks for excuses and never complaints about life being unfair. He simply stays with the task until it is completed.

Edmund Burke once said, “all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” We live in a day when we need good men willing to take a stand for that which is good and right. True goodness comes from our faith in Jesus Christ. Proverbs 12:2 says, “a good man will obtain favor from the Lord.”
