Thought from Don Whitney's book on spiritual life

  • Our calendars are full, but our souls are empty
  • Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness.
  • Like Solomon, we keep discerning that "under the sun" all is vanity and grasping at the wind.
  • Have a Bible reading plan - read consistently
  • Meditation is the absorption of Scriptures.
  • The goal is not just to "get through" a number of pages, but to meet God and hear from Him.
  • Philippians 4:8 - question - what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, or praiseworthy . . .
  • Jesus prohibited the repetitive prayer because we are prone to pray that way.
  • Prayer walk - Mueller did the meditative walk each day
  • Pray through your planned day (Proverbs 16:3)
  • To begin my day without any sense of the Lord's will  regarding my plans, or to begin my work without committing  them to the Lord reflects the same kind of independence that brought sin into the world.
  • Journaling assist in creating and preserving a spiritual heritage, in clarifying and articulating insight and impressions, in monitoring goals and priorities and maintaining spiritual disicpline.
  • Cut back on TV
  • Develop the sound of silence in your life.
  • Collect great questions - ask the right questions and you will become wise
  • Walk with wise men and you will be wise.
  • Think much about heaven.
  • The great truth in Bunyan's Pilgrim Progress is not that Christian endures hardships on the way to the eternal city, but that Christian thought it worthwhile to endure those hardships.
  • Mortify sin - get deadly serious with your sin.
  • Clarify your ambitions, you will simplify your life.
  • Computers do not upgrade intimacy with Jesus.
  • Learn contentment - discontentment complicates life.
  • Contentment helps to focus on right priorities in life.
  • Set reminders for yourself.
  • Remove one thing, organize one thing a day.
  • Physical activities a necessity of life.
  • Sleep -critical to life - Psalms 112:2 - God gives sleep to His beloved.
  • Family Worship is important.
