Everywhere I turn, I see anger at what is going on in Washington. I took a two day trip to a small town that is southwest of New Orleans. Everywhere I stopped, I heard people speaking angrily about what is going on in Washington. It led me to quiet reflection about how do I live in the post health care days as a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • Faith in Jesus Christ – my confidence in never in Washington or anyone else. Washington may pass the laws, but Jesus Christ rules the world
  •
  • Prayer – when difficult days come, we go to our Lord in heaven and asked for his help.
  •
  • Rejoice – Bible says “consider it all joy my brethren we you encounter various trials (I think Washington falls under “various trials”)
  •
  • Keep serving others – that is our call in Jesus Christ – it may be more of a need in the coming days
  •
  • Read the Scriptures – for we get our encouragement from the Scriptures (not from Fox News, CNN news, or MSNBC news)
  •
  • Love my family and friends – Washington has no control over this – I can do this on my own.
  •
  • Stop grumbling – James 5:9 – Do not grumbling against one another, so that you may not be judged.
  •
  • Micah 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God? (Washington has no understanding of justice, kindness or humility; but the question is “Do I?”

We cannot expect Washington to walk correctly, until we as a people walk correctly.

Where do we find the strength to handle life? I have been studying through Nehemiah for the last couple of months and am amazed at the life of Nehemiah. He handles all of life with a strength that is rarely seen in the people I know. He is a man who tackles a political situation that is so difficult that most people would have never even started. He leaves Susa and goes back to Jerusalem to rebuild the walls of the city. He will face political intrigue, vicious rumors, threaten attacks, assassination attempts, and even political betrayal. Most people would have been heartbroken and deeply hurt.

This is the world in which we all live. The fact is that most people do not have the strength to handle difficult moments. I watch daily and see people who are failing miserly at family, work, relationships, and even among their friends. All you have to do is listen for just a moment and you will hear the frustration and pain in their complaints, criticism, and malicious gossip about others.

So how does Nehemiah handle life? In Nehemiah 8, he tells the people of Jerusalem his secret to being strong. The simple answer to strength - the joy of the Lord is your strength. What? He is strong because of joy? YES!

The key is "joy of the Lord". Nehemiah is a man who has a strong faith in the Lord God. His faith is a critical part of his life. He is a man of prayer and a man who walks daily in his faith. His walk with the Lord has produced within him a simple joy. Nehemiah finds a quiet contentment that comes from knowing that the Lord is faithful. He has come to the realization that what God's Word says is really true. He has seen that God truly is in control of all of life.

All of these truths plus so many more have produced within Nehemiah a "joy about life" that comes from the Lord. When "joy" is real, you will find you have strength to handle any situation in life. You have the power to walk in a good way and to handle the most difficult of people or situations in life.

For those who do not think this is true? Look around at everyone who you know is sad, frustrated, or angry. How strong are they? How well do they handle difficult situations? How well do they control their emotions? How well do they respond to their families through the stresses of life?

I truly believe Nehemiah figured out the secret to life: faith in the Lord which produces a joy within our heart and minds, which leads to strength to handle all of life.

As Nehemiah said, "the joy of the Lord is your strength!"

Ambition is always seen as a great trait in a person's life. Ambition is the strong desire to do or achieve something in life. An ambitious person has a strong determination that drives them each day to accomplish the desires of their heart.

Paul, the apostle, was ambitious. He told the church at Corinth "we also have as our ambition" (2 Corinthians 5:9). There was driving desire in his life that moved him each day to make certain decisions and to walk in certain disciplines.

The driving ambition for Paul was not success in the world, it was not money, and it was not power. The driving ambition of the great apostle was to be pleasing to God. Paul wanted every decision that he made, and every action that he took, to be pleasing to God.

It was not only the desire of his heart, but he also taught others the need to have the same ambition. He wrote in Colossians 1:10 "so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God."

So why is it important to be pleasing to the Father? Paul tells in 2 Corinthian 5:10 - we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ." It is a given that sometime in the future everyone will stand by themselves before the Lord God and give an account of their lives. No one will be exempt from having to do this.

Jesus says in Matthew 12:36 "But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the Day of Judgment." Paul says that each one of us "will be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad" (2 Corinthians 5:10). You are going to be judged on the life that you have lived by the true Judge of the world, Jesus Christ.

Are you ready for the day you stand before the Lord? Paul made it his ambition to be pleasing to the one who had final say on his eternal life. The question becomes: how are we to be pleasing to the Father in heaven? The Bible says in Hebrews 11:6 "And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him."

Where are your ambitions taking you in eternity? Jesus says in John 14:6 "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me."
